Young Voices: Difference and Diversity…What is culture?
In the world, there are many cultures. So many it is hard to count. Each one is special and unique and has its own history. The definition of a culture is “the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society,” but it is so much more than that. A culture is an expression of the way you were brought up, with the ideals that surround us be they based on technology, people, or the places we are exposed to. I believe that a culture is something special that everyone ought to treasure, as with it brings a history that has travelled with it.
Culture is expressed in many different ways: through music, dance, food, clothes, religion, and even gender roles. It is through these differences that all cultures are unique. Every person should appreciate differences because it means that we can learn from others, enabling us to broaden our understanding.
‘British ideals’ are democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance. However, this is not reflected in history, nor is it prevalent in Britain today. I feel there needs to be more education and understanding of other cultures, as this will be the key to enlightening people of the beauty and wonders on this planet that is our home and will be our home for generations to come.
