SACCO Events and Initiatives. Bee Beautiful the Environmentally Friendly Way: British Science Week
Margaret Thomas reports on British Science Week

SACCO hosted a fascinating British Science Week event at Sutton Lodge in March this year on the theme of science, health and beauty. By looking at products used in the beauty industry, we saw the extent to which synthetic and natural ingredients - and the elaborate packaging they often come in - respect the environment, animals, and our skin.

The event also showed how natural science can be integrated into small, everyday activities such as beauty and hair routines. Young people demonstrated how to make beauty products from items commonly used in the home, including oil, fruit and honey. Given the worrying decline of bee-friendly flowers in the U.K., and the controversy over the impact of pesticides on our vital bee population, we hope that young people – as we’ve seen, some of the strongest voices in Europe on the issue of the environment – will see the value and diverse uses of natural products.

There are unfortunately very few black women scientists in the U.K., whether the field is astrophysics, zoology or natural science, and these events aim to encourage interest in how experimenting with safe products can lead us to think in new, different ways - including environmentally friendly ones - and show that science is not only fun, but part of everything we do, whether it is biochemistry or beauty.
