Youth Athletics: Sarai Abamba explains the benefits of athletics

My name is Sarai Abamba and I was asked to share something about my sporting achievements. Ever since I was selected for the cross-country running team my sporting ability has progressed. I have competed in sprint, long jump and high jump, rounders and tag rugby. In year 5 I was part of the team chosen to represent our school in the London Youth Games held at Crystal palace, where Croydon came 11th.

Our school continued to build on our success in Year 6. Again, I was selected as part of the team to represent Croydon in the London Youth Games in 75m, 600m, and relay. Some people even got to run on the same track as Usain Bolt. In my races, I came first in 75m and second in 600m. It was an amazing experience. Our borough came 7th overall which was a great improvement from last year.

As an all-rounder I like 600m because I like the feeling to push on even when you are tired because it makes you feel energised. On the other hand, I like the short races because they are over quickly!

In July our school team qualified for the finals of Croydon Schools Athletics Championships which was held at Croydon Arena. I won gold medals in 75m and relay along with a silver in the 600m. Our school took the championships for both boys and girls. I was so happy, and our sports teacher was very proud of the whole team.

My school year ended on a high. Watched by my family, sports day was so much fun. My school house won the whole event! I give thanks to everyone who helped me on the journey.
